GCCCD delegation visits Covestro in Leverkusen

March 2, 2018, at the invitation of Dr. Torsten Erwe, Head of Global Business Partner, Human Resource CTO of Covestro, nine members of the Association of Chinese Chemists and Chemical Engineers in Germany (GCCCD) went to Leverkusen and successfully conducted the meeting with representatives from Covestro.

Followed by visits to Bayer headquarters in 1992, 1994 and 2017, this is the fourth time the GCCCD delegation appears in Leverkusen Chempark. Covestro (formerly Bayer Material Science) is a leading producer of advanced polymers and high-performance plastics around the world. Their innovative developments in polyurethanes, polycarbonates, coating, adhesive and specialty raw materials as well as thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers enhance products in a wide variety of markets.

At the Leverkusen Chempark Restaurant, the GCCCD delegation was warmly received by Dr. Erwe and his colleagues. After lunch, the GCCCD delegation conducted formal discussions with the representatives of Covestro, including Dr. Erwe, Mr. Henning Huechstaedt, Director of PCT and PAT Engineering, and Mr. Helge Kroll, Global Employer Brand and Recruitment Expert.

Followed by brief introductions of participants, Dr. Rongbiao Wang, GCCCD president introduced the overview of GCCCD, including the history of the society, the composition of members and recent activities. Meanwhile, Dr. Wang emphasized the previous cooperation between GCCCD and Covestro. In 2016, Covestro sponsored the 28th GCCCD Annual Conference in Munich. Furthermore, Dr. Yun Chen, the senior vice president of Covestro Shanghai Polymers Co., Ltd., was the vice GCCCD president in 1993. Covestro representatives learned and appreciated GCCCD as an open society for chemical professionals of different nationalities. During the introduction, Dr. Erwe showed interest to the detailed plan of the annual conference in 2018.

Next, Dr. Erwe introduced the general overview of Covestro. Since its spin-off from Bayer in 2015, the good development momentum of Covestro has been affirmed by the market and the stock price has reached three times the issued price. He also introduced Covestro's value: Curious, Courageous, Colorful, and emphasized the importance of diversification represented by Colorful. Currently, the polycarbonate business headquarter, one of Covestro's main businesses, has been established in Shanghai, highlighting the global strategy of Covestro.

After a brief discussion, Mr. Henning Hueckstaedt introduced the Global Project Engineering Division of Covestro. This division was rooted from the Bayer Technology services company and is committed to construct production facilities around the world. In addition to building new plants, they also improve the efficiency of existing production lines and ensure they meet higher environmental protection requirements. Through Mr. Hueckstaedt’s humorous explanation, representatives of GCCCD learned the critical role of project engineering divisions in global chemical companies.

After the talks, Dr. Torsten Erwe extended an invitation to the GCCCD to organize a larger delegation to visit Polyurethane, Polycarbonate, and Thermal Insulation material production lines of Covestro. After learning that GCCCD will usher in its 30th birthday this year, Covestro intends to participate in the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the GCCCD in an appropriate way. During this meeting, Mr. Kroll also exchanged information with the GCCCD members on recent international plastics exhibitions in Germany and China. Eventually, the representatives from GCCCD and Covestro took group photos together and the meeting ended successfully.

This discussion between GCCCD and Covestro improved understanding of each other, promoted further cooperation, and provided GCCCD members an opportunity to learn about the world's leading material companies and communicate with their corporate managers.
