Armin de Meijere

A Titan in Organic Chemistry Across Generations

Professor de Meijere was universally recognized as one of the leading figures in contemporary organic chemistry. His illustrious academic career spanned the golden era of physical organic chemistry and the transformative emergence of transition-metal catalysis, during which he made foundational contributions that continue to shape the field of modern organic synthesis.

Born in Duisburg, Germany, he pursued his studies at the Universities of Freiburg and Göttingen, completing his doctoral degree in 1966 under the supervision of Professor Wolfgang Lüttke. Following his PhD, he conducted postdoctoral research at Yale University with Professor Kenneth W. Wiberg.

He completed his Habilitation in 1971, was appointed Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Göttingen in 1974, served on the faculty of the University of Hamburg from 1977 to 1989, and subsequently returned to Göttingen until his retirement in 2006.

Seminal Scientific Contributions with Lasting Influence

Professor de Meijere pioneered research on highly strained small-ring compounds, cyclopropane/cyclopropene chemistry, and palladium-catalyzed reactions. His innovative methodologies have been widely adopted and applied to natural product and bioactive molecule synthesis.

His early visionary contributions include gold-catalyzed rearrangements (1976), photochemical trifluoromethylation, and the first syntheses of polyrotanes, propellanes, and acepentalene.

He received numerous prestigious awards, including the Adolf von Baeyer Medal of the German Chemical Society (GDCh), and supervised approximately 250 doctoral and postdoctoral researchers.

A Deep and Enduring Bond with GCCCD

The GCCCD pays special tribute to Professor de Meijere for his outstanding contributions to international scientific exchange and talent development. He served not only as the Honorary Chair of the GCCCD Academic Committee, but also for many years as the Chair of the Selection Committee for the GCCCD–GDCh Award for Excellent Supervisors of Chinese PhD Students and the Chair of the Selection Committee for the GCCCD Distinguished Young Chemist Award, playing a pivotal role in advancing the academic development and talent cultivation within the association.

He was an important mentor to many Chinese and German scholars, and through his students and academic legacy, he established a deep and lasting connection with the development of GCCCD.

His passing represents a significant loss to the international chemical sciences community and to Sino-German collaboration in the field of chemistry.

Condolences

We extend our deepest condolences to Professor de Meijere’s family, colleagues, and friends. His scientific legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
